The Fallacy of the 3-Click Rule

The assumption that nothing on your site should be more than 3 clicks away.
UX Booth has an excellent article that challenges the mythical 3-click rule, the assumption that nothing on your site should be more than 3 clicks away. This misguided bit of “common knowledge” has resulted in a variety of user interface travesties such as drop-down menus with flyouts (brrrrrrrr) and other clever-with-a-“K” navigation methods.
The truth is that a well organized and clearly labeled navigation system will invite exploration and, as long as your visitor can see a clear set of choices, the number of clicks it takes to get to a bit of data matters not one whit. Usability is about ease of use, not some arbitrary rule. Read the article here.
